Braidwood Dunes
& Savanna Nature Preserve
County Map    Trail Map
"I was amazed as I walked down the trail through a sea of sunflowers six feet high and butterflies everywhere." - Preserve visitor

Sand dunes in Will County! This rare geologic occurrence at Braidwood Dunes brings with it many plants and animals found no where else in Will County. Carefully prescribed fires have helped restore this black oak-savanna-prairie by opening up the woodlands to native prairie grasses.

Look for blooming cacti, glass lizards, hognose snakes, and an abundance of butterflies in autumn as you walk the 1-mile loop trail through sand dunes, open prairie, savanna, and then wetland.

Braidwood Dunes and Savanna Nature Preserve is located on Route 113, east of Route 53 and I-55, approximately 0.75 miles east of Braidwood.
