| The Environmental Learning Center, in Mokena, offers a unique mixture of educational and recreational opportunities for school and youth groups, teachers, and community organizations. Hiking and cross-country ski trails, canoeing, camping, outdoor and indoor meeting facilities, and a living classroom for environmental studies all are available in the magnificent surroundings of the 1,800-acre Hickory Creek Preserve, replete with forest, prairie, pond, and stream.
For school and youth groups, environmental programs are offered at the Environmental Learning Center and among the most popular programs are pond exploration, fire building, map and compass reading, and forest and field exploration hikes. For scout leaders, programs can be designed to help fulfill badge requirements.
Camping for the Environment provides youth organizations with camping accommodations, varied and interesting nature studies, and an always changing natural classroom sure to stimulate student minds. |

Located on Briarwood Lane in Mokena, north of Route 30 and east of Wolf Road. From Wolf Road, turn east on Cleveland Avenue, then south on Briarwood Lane. The entrance is at the end of Briarwood Lane.

In-service workshops are available for teachers. These workshops can be presented by Forest Preserve staff during the week, institute days, weekends, and after-school hours. (To view the current in-service workshops, click Professional Development Workshops below.)
The Environmental Learning Center also offers local businesses, community groups, and organizations a picturesque setting in which to hold their groups meeting. With a capacity of 35 people, the indoor meeting area includes coffee service, audio/visual and instructional equipment, and tables and chairs. Groups can also rent the Yurt, a circular structure of canvas and wood. Amenities include a large outdoor cooking area, picnic tables, campfire site, and trails. Catered meals can be arranged for groups using either facility.
Forest Preserve staff will work with you to make sure your visit is informative and enjoyable. Youth and adults alike come away from their visit to the Environmental Learning Center with a deeper appreciation of the wonders and variety of nature.
