| "I come here to get away from it all; it's a quiet, peaceful place." - Preserve visitor
Raccoon Grove Nature Preserve represents a rare natural ecology.
Prior to settlement, the land had evolved into a prairie grove-a
stand of forest surrounded by grasslands. Controlled fire is used
by Forest Preserve resource managers on a portion of Raccoon Grove
to recreate the historic character of the land. Its topography of
creek and low ground makes for a gorgeous preserve.
A 0.5-mile hiking trail traverses a floodplain with a meandering creek and several small ravines carved out of the Valparaiso Moraine.
For visitors, blue-eyed Marys and Virginia bluebells provide a visual delight in the spring. The forest also provides habitat for birds throughout the year.
Raccoon Grove Nature Preserve is located on Pauling Road, east of Route 50 (Governors Highway), 1.0 miles south of Monee.Summer Hours (April - October) 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. / Winter Hours (November - March) 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. |
