Voters approved on April 5, 2005 a $95 million bond issuance requested by the Forest Preserve District of Will County that will be used to purchase between 4,500 and 5,000 acres of land and improve 36 different sites already owned by the District. The initiative passed by a 53 to 47 percent.

The District identified more than 9,000 acres around the county suitable for preservation, which were examined and approved by the Citizens Advisory Committee. Preservation goals include protecting Will County waterways, its creeks and streams; expanding current District holdings to create greenways, extended tracts of protected space that better serves wildlife and plant survival; and keeping pace with Will County's extraordinary growth and development.

Of the $95 million, $83 million will be used for land preservation, and the remaining $12 million will go into 36 site improvement projects. These include the development of new trail systems, maintenance and upgrades to existing sites, and public access to District properties.

The $95 million bond issuance will be paid off over a 20-year period. Homeowners in Will County will see an increase of about $9.00 for each $100,000 of home value.
