"Buildings should be good neighbors." Paul Thiry

Are you interested in seeing countertops made from recycled yogurt cartons? Lights that come on without flipping a switch or windows designed to let in specific amounts of light? What about solar panels that produce 20% of a building's electricity?

Just opened in the fall of 2003, the Sugar Creek Administration Center was designed not only to serve the needs of the Forest Preserve and the public, but also to serve as a model of green architecture. Buildings have a tremendous impact on the environment-both during construction and through their operation. The word "green" is a term used to indicate practices that minimize our impact on the environment and produce healthier living and working places. In architecture, there are many ways a building may be "green." The center's green features range from solar panels on the roof to recycled carpet on the floor.

The Sugar Creek Center, open from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. weekdays, is located at 17540 W. Laraway Road, .75 mile west of Route 52 in Joliet. Call 815.727.8700 for more information.

For those eager to see this new model of environmentally friendly construction, a tour will be offered of the building and the surrounding native landscaping. On this tour, you'll have the opportunity to view all of the innovative green technologies, understand why green is better for humans and the environment, and take home practical tips to practice green living in your own home.

Tours will be held every other month on Saturday mornings. Tours are free of charge and no reservations are required.
