Who are the Prairie People Volunteers?

Established in the 1920s, the Forest Preserve District of Will County serves to preserve the natural and scenic land of Will County for the purposes of the recreation, pleasure, and education of its residents.

These goals are enhanced with the contributions of Prairie People Volunteers. Professionals, students, seniors, organized groups, and families - these are among the generous people who have become Prairie People Volunteers. With many talents and interests, all share a common sense of pride in giving to their community.

An essential part of the Forest Preserve, Prairie People Volunteers allow us to perform services and present programs that otherwise would not be possible. Some of these include:

  • Restoring natural areas
  • Teaching children and adults about nature and the environment
  • Monitoring trails and preserves
  • Answering visitor's questions
  • Assisting at Forest Preserve facilities, programs, and special events

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Each year, the Forest Preserve District of Will County hosts a Volunteer Banquet to express our appreciation for those who have given of themselves. Other benefits are as numerous as the volunteers themselves. You are performing important tasks for the environment and community, learning new things, and meeting new people.

What volunteer opportunities exist for me?

Leading bird-viewing programs at Lake Renwick, taking photographs for Forest Preserve brochures, managing natural areas - these are just a few of the volunteer opportunities available to Prairie People Volunteers. No matter what your talent and interest, there is a volunteer opportunity waiting for you with the Forest Preserve. Other ideas are:

  • Help campers and present programs at the Environmental Learning Center in Mokena
  • Bring the 18th-century fur trade alive at Isle a la Cache Museum in Romeoville
  • Enrich the bird-viewing experience of those attending Lake Renwick Heron Rookery in Plainfield
  • Monitor Forest Preserve trails while hiking, biking, skiing, horse-back riding or in-line skating
  • Share your expertise as you lead fishing clinics for beginners and experienced anglers at Monee Reservoir
  • Take photographs or use your computer skills on Forest Preserve brochures
  • Take responsibility for a natural area and lead preserve workdays and cleanups
  • Lead hikes on animal tracking and wild edibles for enthusiastic children and families at Plum Creek Nature Center in Crete
  • Earn community service credit for volunteering for Forest Preserve projects
  • Donate you time helping the public at Forest Preserve special events
