The 80-acre Whalon Lake opened to the public in October 2008. Free shoreline fishing is available, or you can bring your own fishing boat. (A boat launch is provided. Only electric trolling motors are allowed, and fishing boats can be no longer than 16 feet.) Canoes and kayaks are also welcome.
The Whalon Lake Dog Park is comprised of three enclosures, two of which are open at a time. The larger 8-acre enclosure is open to all dogs, and the smaller 2.5-acre park is available to only small dogs (35 pounds or less). An annual permit is required to use the Dog Park. The preserve's asphalt trail, suitable for hiking, running, biking, in-line skating and cross-country skiing, winds through the preserve and completely encircles the lake. This trail is part of the DuPage River Trail, a multi-jurisdictional trail that will eventually run from DuPage County to the Village of Shorewood.
